В 1953-64 занимал политические посты в Калифорнии. Республиканец, работал в аппарате губернатора Калифорнии Р. Рейгана [ Reagan, Ronald Wilson]. В 1972-73 директор Административно-бюджетного управления [ Office of Management and Budget], за жесткость и эффективное руководство этим ведомством получил прозвище Каспар-нож ["Cap the Knife"]. В 1973-75 министр здравоохранения, образования и социального обеспечения [ Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare]. В 1975-80 в руководстве корпорации "Бектел груп" [Bechtel Group]. В 1980 активно участвовал в предвыборной кампании Рейгана. В 1981-87 министр обороны [ Secretary of Defense]. Был одним из самых близких советников президента Рейгана, сторонником развертывания работ по реализации СОИ [ SDI]. В июне 1992 Уайнбергеру было предъявлено обвинение в лжесвидетельстве и создании препятствий расследованию по делу "Иран-контрас" [ Iran-Contra affair], виновным себя не признал, а в сентябре федеральный судья частично снял с него обвинения. 24 декабря 1992 президент Дж.
